Policy Corner: Tell President Obama to put physical activity in State of the Union

On the eve of the State of the Union address (9 p.m. ET, Wednesday, Jan. 27), ACSM leaders have advised President Obama and his staff that physical activity and exercise offer preventive health benefits on which everyone can agree. A letter from ACSM President James Pivarnik, Ph.D., FACSM, and President-Elect Thomas Best, M.D., Ph.D., FACSM, points out that physical activity and exercise enjoy widespread support from all sectors and should be part of meaningful health care reform.

Please take a moment to send your own message to the president, supporting healthy lifestyles as part of real health care reform. Using the sample language provided—or, preferably, in your own words—make the case for programs that encourage all Americans to be more physically active and provide more opportunities for underserved populations.

Link to the ACSM Action Alert to send your message, and then please suggest that your friends and colleagues do the same. While you’re at it, sign up to become a member/advocate or Key Contact to help advance a policy agenda that favors physical activity and exercise. more
