Gates, Mullen dig in on budget decisions
from Aerospace Daily & Defense Report
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stood their ground in testimony to Senate defense appropriators who peppered them on the Joint Strike Fighter's alternate engine, C-17 airlifters and other spending priorities. Gates sparred with Sen. Patty Murray D-Wash. over widebody aircraft engineering for national security needs far into the future. Murray pressed Gates over ending the Boeing C-17 production line - as they have debated before - with Murray questioning how the U.S. would maintain such engineering expertise.
