DoD to explore new energy-saving solutions

from Army Times

What's up: The Democratic chairman and the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee agree that cutting energy costs is a good way for the Defense Department to save money. In a Sept. 29 letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Rep. Ike Skelton, and Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, singled out operations-related energy use as a place for savings, suggesting converting tactical waste to energy and improving insulation on structures are ideas worth exploring.

What's next: A prime example of the potential is the Army's claim that it cut energy costs by 55 percent by covering a building in Baghdad in foam, something Skelton and McKeon said is a "low-technology solution" that reduced heating fuel consumption by 10,690 gallons a year. They want the Defense Department to deliver a list of energy-saving ideas to the House committee early next year, in advance of the 2012 budget. more
