Military cutbacks could hit Western Massachusetts bases
from The Republican
The Bay State's military installations survived major cutbacks and avoided closure with the 2005 federal Base Closure and Realignment Commission, but the new focus on Capitol Hill to reduce federal spending may not bode well for the Massachusetts bases. The state's congressional delegation will work to protect military bases across the commonwealth, including Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Mass., and the Air and Army National Guard units at Barnes Regional Airport in Westfield, Mass., but, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. recently cautioned that "potentially devastating budget cuts could threaten defense programs everywhere across the country."
