California governor revises flammability standards

In an effort to protect public safety by reducing the use of toxic flame retardants, California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. has directed state agencies to revise flammability standards for upholstered furniture sold in the state. "A growing body of evidence suggests these chemicals harm human health and the environment," Brown said. The guidelines in place now will be updated to reflect modern manufacturing methods that can lower the use of harmful chemicals while meeting safety standards. more
