When Hurricane Hugo ripped through Isle of Palms, S.C., in 1989, it was the most destructive hurricane the U.S. had endured to date. The small island, normally a relaxing and family-oriented beachfront destination, was damaged severely by the Category-4 hurricane. Though no lives were lost, the storm destroyed houses, bridges and buildings.
