Price policy and health

from Sonja K. Billes

Saturday's session included a new track, Policy. In the afternoon session, Dr. Alston presented data challenging the belief that farm subsidies contribute to obesity. In a talk about what we’ve learned from tobacco policy, Dr. Chaloupka outlined how low-income people are more responsive to changes in price, and that people are more likely to support a tax when it is used for prevention. Dr. Hawkes showed that there is scant evidence for an effect of food pricing on consumer choice. He echoed Dr. Chaloupka's finding that price affects food choices among low-income people, and that making unhealthy foods more expensive than their healthier alternatives may be a good place to start. more
