from NDA

As part of the association's new Education Initiative, the technical sessions offered at next year's 40th Anniversary Celebration in San Diego on March 23–26 are divided into four major areas, all of great importance to all companies involved in the demolition process. On March 25, retired Navy Cmdr. Mike Abrashoff, author of "The Best Damn Ship in the Navy" will speak on the management issues of running a complex organization such as a navy ship or a demolition company. Abrashoff's presentation will discuss management style and personnel management as a part of any kind of complex organization. This is our Management offering.

The next session on March 25 will feature NDA Past President and Lifetime Achievement Award winner John Weber of ICONCO, one of the world's foremost implosion contractors; Mark Loizeaux of CDI; and Peter Ward of Ward Demolition who is currently working in Christchurch, New Zealand. This session will deal with the devastation of the Christchurch earthquake and the work that demolition industry is doing to bring Christchurch back. This is our Disaster Response offering.

Beginning March 26, our occupational safety and health attorney, Mark Lies of Seyfarth, Shaw in Chicago will discuss legal issues confronting the demolition industry such as current OSHA programs, changes to workers' comp rules and other important safety issues. This is our Safety offering.

The last education session on March 26 will involve a comprehensive look at three important environmental issues for the demolition industry. First, Andrew DeBaise of Rocky Mountain Recycling will discuss the importance of metals recycling, ferrous and nonferrous. He will be followed by Gavin Broatch of the city of San Diego who will discuss the city's new C&D recycling ordinance and its implications across the state of California and beyond. Finally, Chris Godek, our Environment Committee chair and either David Hockey or Molly Finn from the U.S. EPA will discuss the whole issue of PCBs in caulk. This is our Environmental offering. Next year’s convention will reflect the NDA’s commitment to its Mission to provide our members with the skills necessary to be leaders in Environmental Stewardship, Safety, Education, Professional Competency and Government Advocacy. more
