Clemson students compete under a new masonry design competition format

from NCMA Foundation

There are 45 engineering and architecture students from Clemson University in Clemson, S.C., participating this spring in a novel, new type of student design competition. Teams of five students are collaborating to not only design a full-scale single-wythe concrete masonry wall with prescribed openings, but also to construct their designed walls and then test them for structural capacity. The students have completed their preliminary designs using hand calculations and are now performing numerical models of each wall using finite element software. Instructors for the classes are Dr. Sez Atamturktur and Dr. Russell Brown. The competition is endorsed by the Carolinas Concrete Masonry Association who is providing educational block plant tours, materials, facilities for testing, guidance for the judging criteria and skilled masons for hands-on construction training for the students. This project, funded in part through a grant from the NCMA Education and Research Foundation, is envisioned as a prototype for use by other universities. For more information on student design competitions click here or contact NCMA Director of Technical Publications Dennis Graber. Remember, the deadline is May 31 for the next round of grant applications (student design competitions and all others). more
