FEMA calls for Tribal input and solicits comment for emergency and disaster declaration process — Comments Due by April 22

from IAEM

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, President Obama signed the Sandy Recovery Improvement Act of 2013, including a provision amending the Stafford Act to provide federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native governments the option to choose whether to make a request directly to the President for a federal emergency or major disaster declaration, or to seek assistance, as they do presently, under a declaration for a state. To implement this provision, FEMA is consulting with Indian tribal governments through the publication of a "Solicitation for Comments Regarding Current Procedures to Request Emergency and Major Disaster Declarations" in the Federal Register (Docket ID FEMA-2013-0006 Document Number 2013-05391). To date, FEMA has hosted more than 20 conference calls to gather tribal comments and insights related to declarations procedures. Visit www.fema.gov/tribal-consultations to view the transcripts of the calls, and the comments received to date. Comments should be submitted per the guidelines in the Federal Register Notice. FEMA also will be accepting comments via its online collaboration site and by email. Comments will be accepted until April 22, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. more
