Tourism: Niagara's economic backbone

from St. Catharines Standard

Revenue at Niagara Falls hotels has remained steady since 2007, when earnings reached an all-time high of more than $400 million, according to the yearly Smith Travel Research reports. The American-based company tracks supply-and-demand data for the hotel industry in North America. In 2012, revenue was at $370 million, a jump from 1999 when it was $256 million. "The city is now a pretty sophisticated place with an eclectic mix of specific products and brands," said Doug Birell, president of Canadian Niagara Hotels, which owns nine major hotels in the Fallsview tourist area. more
