Clemson students test masonry structural design in competition

from NCMA Foundation

Forty-five students of Clemson University Clemson, SC participated in a design competition where they were not only required to design a wall section, but build it and then physically test the wall for wind load type of resisting capacity. Taking home the $1500 first prize with the best overall score was Zachary Graham, Vaughn Hayduk, Evan Mantilla, Christopher Mattison and Rohith Pamraj. Masonry professor Dr. Sez Atamturktur developed the competition as part of her Masonry Structural Design Class where the students were judged on structural performance (35 percent), prediction of structural capacity (20 percent), constructability (15 percent), aesthetics and craftsmanship (15 percent) and functional use of concrete masonry materials (15 percent). Four additional awards in the amount of $500 to $1,000 each were presented to winners of other categories. The competition was endorsed by the Carolinas Concrete Masonry Association and funded by the NCMA Foundation.
