Don't blame the IT band

from By Heidi Mills

The IT, or iliotibial band, has developed a pretty bad reputation over the years. This long, thick band of fascia is implicated due to its involvement in the incriminatingly titled, IT band syndrome. This is a condition prevalent in runners and cyclists where pain develops on the lateral knee and is often termed "runner's knee." It is frequently quoted by athletic trainers and physical therapists as being due to a "tight" IT band. But is it really all the fault of the IT band? Or is the IT band simply the scapegoat for problems further along the chain? more
