OMCA's Quarterly Licence Status Check Now Includes 'CODE W' Information

from OMCA

Subscribers to OMCA's quarterly licence status check service will be happy to hear that our system will now identify drivers having a Code W medical restriction that precludes a bus or truck driver from driving in the U.S. At the end of May MTO began re-issuing plastic driver licence cards to 40,000 commercial drivers in Ontario (truck and bus) who have a medical condition that precludes them from legally driving a commercial vehicle in the U.S. The licence cards will show a letter "W" in the "Rest/Cond" area of the licence. The medical conditions that trigger a Code W are:

• Diabetes requiring insulin
• Hearing impairment
• Monocular vision
• Epilepsy/seizure history

If your drivers drive a bus or truck only within Canada, the Code W may not interest you and you can ignore it altogether. However, if you send drivers on trips to the U.S., you will want to know which of your drivers have a Code W restriction so you can stop sending those drivers to the U.S. as their commercial licence is invalid there. For this reason, we have now included the Code W as a data element for the Quarterly Licence Status Check, in addition to Licence Class, Air Brake and Prescription Lenses. If you set all your drivers to "NO" for Code W, on the next Quarterly Status Check (August 22) you will get a "hit" on any driver that has a Code W according to Ministry records. more
