Sheep counters brave Anza-Borrego heat

from The San Diego Union-Tribune

You have to be a special kind of crazy to spend four days just sitting in the summer heat of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Fortunately, there are enough of those kinds of folks to successfully complete the 43rd annual Desert Bighorn Sheep Count, sponsored by the Anza-Borrego Foundation. These hardy volunteers even call themselves "Extreme Volunteer Sheep Counters." This year they endured high humidity and temperatures that topped 112 degrees, but tallied 332 bighorn, replacing the 2011 total as the second-largest count. The 2012 count recorded 273 animals. The highest number ever recorded was 356 in 2009. more
