NAVA Votes to Join No. 522 Coalition Opposing Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods

The Northwest Automatic Vending Council has voted to join the coalition opposing Initiative 522, which would require labeling of genetically engineered foods, as defined in the measure, on the packaging of raw agricultural commodities, processed foods and seed and seed stock, or on retail shelf signage for unpackaged products. It would require thousands of common foods to be labeled as "Genetically Engineered" even if they have no detectable level of GE ingredient. Violations of the labeling requirements would result in "misbranding" penalties of up to $1,000 per day. more
