Oilheat Retreat 2013 — A weekend of networking, fun and science

from OESP

September is a wonderful time of the year for a retreat, and the weather this past weekend could not have been any better. Skies were blue and the temperature was in the high 60s.

The Retreat opened with a Thursday welcome reception. Friday, the group went to Brookhaven Labs and met with our industry friend and host, Dr. Tom Butcher. Our tour escort, Tara Shiels, accompanied us on the bus as we took a driving tour of the campus. Brookhaven Labs sits on over 1,400 acres of developed land with plenty of additional acres that are undeveloped. The Lab was established in 1947.

We learned they have a 200-acre solar farm situated on the property that is managed by BP Solar & Met Life. Long Island Power Authority purchases the output. We are told that this supplies enough energy for 4,500 homes.

Our first stop was at the Interdisciplinary Science Building — a new building that officially opened in April. The goals within this building are to develop breakthrough technology for batteries, biofuels and solar panels.

After another stop at the Applied Physical and Chemical Science Building, we enjoyed a lively discussion with Tom about the future of energy and work currently being done on Bioheat™.

Next week we’ll share with you more on the details of our retreat. more
