‘‘My neck hurts.’’ The 9 year-old boy winced as he gingerly touched the right side of his neck. ‘‘I think it’s because of this lump right here on the side. Do you see it?’’ His mother hurried to the boy’s bed. It looked as if he had swallowed a golf ball. Even the lightest touch hurt. The boy seemed fine when his mother dropped him off at school that morning, but a couple of hours later he had a temperature of 102. He didn’t look that sick when she picked him up; his cheeks were flushed, but his attitude and appetite seemed fine. more
