Professional development: Who's in control?

Nearly 9 out of 10 marketers say there are barriers to professional development in their organizations, according to the brand new Marketing Week/IDM training survey 2014. This is shocking. Even more so when we hear that three quarters of the decisions made about professional development are made without any involvement from higher management. It suggests that employers still appear to regard training as an individual responsibility, not an organizational one. There is little strategic planning behind employee development and no clear development paths for employees. And when you factor in that only 34 percent of marketers say they got to their current position by being promoted internally, it looks like there's also still a tendency to fill organizational skills gaps from outside rather than by train up existing talent. more
