Tattooing animal legislation comes back in spotlight after recent incident

from NYSVMS

A Brooklyn tattoo artist recently came under fire for Instagramming a photo of a tattoo he inked on his dog while the animal was under anesthesia for a surgical procedure. Following the news story, bills have been introduced in both the Assembly and Senate in response to the decorative tattooing and piercing of companion animals. The NYSVMS does not support the practice of performing decorative procedures, such as tattoos or piercings, on companion animals that are not deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian. Any procedure requiring anesthesia by New York state law must be done by a veterinarian, and it is the professional judgment of the veterinarian to determine if a procedure is medically necessary as part of a treatment plan or done for identification purposes.
