Legislative Update — Key Senator Calls for Swift Action on Highway Funding

Last Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released a status report on the Highway Trust Fund and found that the fund will reach critically low levels as early as July. As of March 28, the Highway Account cash balance was $8.4 billion. Based on current spending and revenue trends, the DOT estimates that the Highway Account of the Highway Trust Fund will encounter a shortfall before September 30, the end of fiscal year 2014. Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat who chairs the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on transportation, called the projection, "a wake-up call to Congress." In her statement, she reiterated her call for Congress to act, and avoid another highway funding crisis this summer. NACD members will be meeting with Senator Murray's staff during the annual Washington Fly-In next week. more
