At the University of Florida's Shands Hospital, patients scheduled for percutaneous coronary intervention are routinely screened for genetic variations that could render the anti-clotting drug clopidogrel ineffective. A blood test is processed within 24 hours and results are added to patients' electronic medical record. If patients have a variation that could predispose them to heart attack, stent thrombosis or other issues, the EMR alerts the cardiologist. When a prescription is written for a patient with such a genetic variation, the EMR recommends alternate drugs. more
