School district cleared to use third party for transportation

A decision by an arbitration panel — upheld at a recent Plainfield Board of Selectmen meeting — gives the Board of Education the right to outsource its school transportation system. Late last month, during contract arbitration between the school board and CSEA SEIU Local 2001, which represents the town's bus drivers and mechanics, the majority of the three-member panel determined the school board may subcontract its town-run bus system to a third party. In its finding, the panel cited the age of the current bus fleet — 52 percent of the town's 45 buses are more than 10 years old — the continued cost of vehicle maintenance and the cost savings associated with subcontracting. more
