Ontario's Minister of Transportation supports Electronic Logging Devices for commercial vehicle drivers

from OMCA

Today's Trucking has reported that at the recent Ontario Trucking Association annual conference, Ontario's Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca said he supports Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) as an effective tool for monitoring hours of service compliance by commercial motor vehicle drivers. The minister is quoted as saying, "Ontario believes an effective ELD mandate is one that is adopted nationally, and supports the work already underway by Transport Canada to determine if ELDs should be mandated on extra provincial carriers. MTO will continue to work with Transport Canada, and our provincial-territorial colleagues to create a national solution — if a national solution is not reached, Ontario will look at other options." The Minister also announced the province is considering allowing Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) trucks (a tractor towing two, 53 foot trailers) to operate 12 months of the year on Ontario's controlled access, multi-lane highways. Presently LCV operations are suspended during the winter months. more
