North Carolina Senate OKs option for school bus cameras, issuing fines

from The Associated Press via WTVD-TV

Local governments and school districts soon could have administrative tools to expand the use of cameras to reduce the number of motorists driving by stopped school buses loading and unloading children. The Senate voted to allow counties to initiate ordinances that enforce state law already prohibiting vehicles from unlawfully passing buses when their stop arms swing open and lights flash. The local school system then would have the option to contract with vendors to install cameras and cite violators with $500 civil penalties, much like red-light cameras. more
