Message from the NFAIS Executive Director:

We’re very excited to unveil a new virtual education program, NFAIS Lunch & Learn, where the information services community will have the opportunity to share insights and expertise, challenge current thinking, highlight industry trends and new technologies, and motivate others in the pursuit of excellence. Best of all, this new program is free for NFAIS members and available to non-members for a nominal fee.

NFAIS’ mission is to help advance scholarly, scientific, and professional research by enabling the global information community to examine issues of content, technology and business models integral to their future success, and which provide ease of access to and effective navigation and use of authoritative, credible information. Whether you’re a publisher, library, database creator, information technology developer, host system or content management provider, we want you to be a part of these discussions, and invite you to share your experiences and expertise by presenting at a Lunch & Learn event. Submissions for our Call for Presentations must be received by Aug. 7, 2015, and we hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity to shape the future of information services.

Inside this issue of NFAIS Advances, read about the new vision for the NLM (National Library of Medicine urged to take on a broader role) and the UK’s challenges with big data (Whitehall data scientists ‘lack adequate Big Data tools’), as well as Stanford’s role in building an open-access repository of bioinformatics data on autism ($9 million grant to establish open-access autism database at Stanford).

We hope you enjoy this week’s issue of NFAIS Advances! As always, we welcome your feedback on ways we can make NFAIS most helpful to you.
