from NFAIS

Marcie Granahan,
NFAIS Executive Director
Happy 4th of July and the start of a great summer! As the weather heats up, so does NFAIS’ planning for this year’s lineup of webinars, workshops and our new Lunch & Learn virtual education series (which is free for NFAIS members). Just a reminder: we’re currently accepting presentations, and the submission deadline is August 7th (read more here).

In this week’s edition of NFAIS Advances, we look at what’s next for scholarly publishing. From John Regazzi’s reflections on the shifting landscape of scholarly publishing from “content as king” to “content as kingmaker,” to the launch of Thieme’s “pay what you want” open-access journal, to the effect of digital technologies on academic freedom (see Does Science 2.0 foster greater academic freedom?), to China's rising prowess in research and science (see The globalization of universities and science in Southern China).

As always, don’t forget to join the discussion in the NFAIS Advances Community Forum. In addition, be sure to check out the photo album from our June 18th workshop on “Platforms that Perform: Taking Your Content to the Next Level" held at The Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

I hope you enjoy reading this week’s issue of NFAIS Advances! And feel free to share this with your colleagues and friends.

Marcie Granahan
Executive Director
