FHWA Launches New Tunnel-Inspection Program

from U.S. Department of Transportation/Federal Highway Administration

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has published standards for its new, national tunnel-inspection program, modeled after its long-standing bridge-inspection program. Until now, FHWA provided tunnel-inspection guidance, but lacked the wherewithal to require tunnel owners to inspect their tubes, let alone follow a standard method. FHWA will compile an inventory of the nation's tunnels and require owners to annually inspect each one on a public road and submit written reports to FHWA; quickly correct deficiencies; and train tunnel inspectors per criteria of a new, national certification program. FHWA has developed guidance documents and manuals to support the new standards. more
