U.S. Wastewater-Reuse Market To Total $11.0 Billion through 2025

from Bluefield Research

Drought and other environmental conditions affecting water supplies across the U.S. Sunbelt are converting wastewater reuse into a critically important factor for addressing long-term water-supply risks. According to a new report from Bluefield Research — U.S. Municipal Wastewater & Reuse: Market Trends, Opportunities, & Forecasts, 2015-2025 — only 6.4% of U.S.-wastewater flows are reused for industrial, irrigation, or municipal purposes. Bluefield is forecasting that wastewater reuse for municipal utilities will increase 61% by 2025, requiring $11 billion in capital expenditures. About 94% of the activity will occur in nine states, headlined by Florida, California, Texas, and Arizona. Potable reuse — treating wastewater to drinking water quality — comprises 15% of the total capacity, but Bluefield expects it to increase to 19% by 2025. According to Bluefield, about 250 reuse projects are in the pipeline; more than $1.9 billion of reuse applications have been submitted for approval in California alone. more
