Senior surgeons 'need teacher training to tackle sex harassment, bullying'

Senior surgeons should be forced to undertake teaching training to eliminate widespread sexual harassment and bullying of students, particularly females, says a report. Women comprise only about a third of doctors in Australia, despite half of university medical students being female, and are more likely to experience gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying than their male counterparts. A report in the Medical Journal of Australia, written by Professor Merrilyn Walton, has called for clinical supervisors to be trained in teaching methods, different learning styles, ethics and patient safety and about sexual stereotyping, to tackle inequality. more
