Declining numbers of school-bus drivers have Metro scrambling to retake the wheel

from Nashville Scene

Pamela Franklin is supposed to be bouncing over potholes in a big yellow bus right now, chasing the sunrise and hauling as many as 84 students from the Cane Ridge cluster to school. Instead, she's driving a white Dodge Avenger, leading a tour to show how Metro Nashville Public Schools' already strained bus system has been kneecapped by a mass exodus of bus drivers. Officials say the school system needs another 143 drivers on the road after persistent losses of five to 10 employees a week, largely to trucking and other better-paying driving jobs. The 417 drivers who remain, as of press time, are running additional routes in an extraordinarily complex bus system. more
