NAPT's America's Best hosts Great America School Bus Race

Get your buses ready for Richmond

The 4th Annual Great American School Bus Race will be a featured attraction during the Saturday evening event sponsored by Thomas Built Buses at the 2015 Summit on November 7th. Ever dreamed of racing your very own school bus and blowing the wheels off of the competition? Well, here is your chance. This pine wood derby style race is open to all Summit and America's Best participants.

To challenge for the title you only need to pre-register and then bring your version of a "School Bus" that complies with the following regulations. Buses will be paired in "Heat Races" with the winners advancing toward the finals. So join the fun and be part of the excitement as you experience the sights and sounds of school bus racing live!

School Bus Construction Regulations
  1. Must be constructed of wood
  2. Must reasonably resemble a school bus
  3. Must have 6 wheels
  4. Wheels must be official Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Pine Wood Derby wheels. Wheel kits $1.99 each (4 wheels/4 axles) are available at most local craft stores, local BSA offices, or at: http://www.scoutstuff.org/bsa/crafts/pinewood-derby/accessories.html
  5. Wheels may have the mold "parting line" and other slight mold imperfections removed, but may NOT have any other modifications.
  6. Wheel contact surface must remain flat. Wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded.
  7. Bearings/bushings are prohibited
  8. Axles shall be made of straight steel pins
  9. Lubrication must be dry type graphite or Teflon. No liquid lubricants allowed.
  10. School bus overall dimensions shall not exceed:
      a) Width 3 ¾ inches
      b) Height 5 ½ inches
      c) Length 20 inches
      d) Weight 4 pounds
Each bus will be required to pass "Tech Inspection" prior to being allowed to participate. The official race scale that is used at bus weigh-in shall be considered final. All buses must fit completely within a dimension tolerance box. All wheels/axles will be closely inspected for unapproved modifications. Buses deemed as not in compliance with all rules shall be disqualified. The decisions of the Tech Inspection Team will be FINAL! more
