Why do Syracuse students walk 2 miles to get to school?

Syracuse high school students are fed up with having to walk up to 2 miles from or to school each day. They've taken their concerns to the city school board and protested the district's current policy. Superintendent Sharon Contreras said the district has been trying to reduce the "walk zone" to 1.5 miles for three years. "This is such an equity issue in terms of making sure that poor students get to school, which is the crux of how you improve achievement," Contreras said. "To have to walk nearly 2 miles to school and back — there is nothing the students have said that I could argue with. You have our support." more
