American Educator explores positive school discipline

from AFT

The winter issue of American Educator explores new research on the ways members of the school community can work together to ensure that schools are safe and welcoming for everyone. An article on a union and districtwide effort in New Haven, Conn., shows how educators are being trained in restorative practices to improve school climates and keep students in school and learning. Researcher Cheryl Staats explains what educators should know about implicit bias and how to mitigate its effects, while Kavitha Mediratta, of the Atlantic Philanthropies, explores the role of philanthropy in promoting positive approaches to school discipline. This special issue also features a comprehensive list of resources on positive school discipline created by the AFT as well as several partners and allies. more
