Districts outside Garland must also pay to transport tornado-stricken students

from The Dallas Morning News

School districts outside the tornado zone are being asked to pay a share of the $4,862.50 daily tab for transporting displaced students to their schools inside Garland and Rowlett. Garland school officials contracted with a vendor to transport 159 GISD students who because of the Dec. 26 tornado, moved outside the school district. The vendor enlists 25 vehicles and its total bill was $23,355 as of Jan. 27. The federal McKinney-Vento Act provides for homeless students and outlines the process by which costs must be shared. The law says that school of origin transportation must continue throughout the period a child is homeless or until the end of the school year in which the child becomes permanently housed. more
