Health region's overcapacity woes strain paramedics

Paramedics recently spent an "alarming" 145 hours waiting to hand off patients at Saskatoon hospitals — the equivalent of having 1.5 fewer ambulances on the street every day, MD Ambulance spokesman Troy Davies said. "We can only rely on our staff for so long to run at this pace before they burn out, and that's what we're starting to see," he said. The Saskatoon Health Region recently declared an overcapacity crisis, caused by a seasonal surge of both patient and staff illnesses. more
