Despite our claims otherwise, a lot of us don’t exercise to improve the function of the most important muscle in the body: the heart.

Many of us either don’t know or have forgotten that the heart’s efficiency perhaps is the best indicator of our overall fitness level.

But how do you know how well that muscle is performing? You can’t see it in that gym selfie, after all.

This is where knowing your target heart rate is crucial.

"When you’re working in your target heart-rate range, it makes your heart much stronger so it can pump more blood out with each beat," said Michael Hyek, senior director at the McConnell Heart Health Center.
