Missoula gearing up for another round of refugees

from Missoulian

The two eighth-grade Hmong girls were lost in a world beyond their comprehension. Turns out their student teacher at Missoula's Franklin Elementary School was, too. "I would teach a lesson to the class and then go back to the back of the room and reteach it to them," Mark Thane said. He remembers noting the girls seemed especially on edge when he did so. It was the fall of 1980 and Missoula-area schools were just figuring out how to deal with a wave of more than 600 Hmong refugees from Southeast Asia, nearly half of whom had arrived under the auspices of the International Rescue Committee in the previous year and a half. more
