Transportation planning: Leave 20th century behind

It got big play on tech blogs, but not much attention otherwise. Yet there is a strong chance that announcement by Ford, Google, Uber, Lyft and Volvo that they had formed a massive lobbying group to press the U.S. government to accelerate its preparations for a coming age of autonomous, driverless, cleaner cars will be seen as a historic moment. The Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets has a difficult job ahead of it — but it might not be as daunting as it now appears once the benefits of driverless cars sink in. They would sharply reduce congestion and improve travel speeds, helping the economy and improving quality of life. They would sharply improve public safety, minimizing the carnage on our roads and freeways. more
