Making school climate a priority through district policy

from NSCC

Jessica Savage, Esq., NSCC's Policy and Legal Director, presented at the National School Board Association's annual conference in Boston on April 11. The talk, entitled "District-Level School Climate Policy," was on the merits of codifying school climate improvement efforts in policy and techniques for doing so. Attendees included school board members, superintendents and principals from across the country. The talk covered topics such as what is school climate policy, why it is important, national trends in policy, how to create school climate explicit policy in a school district, and how Westbrook Connecticut created and adopted a comprehensive school climate district policy for their school district. Attendees participated in lively discussion about special considerations involved in school climate policy creation and adoption, including the connection between school climate policy and equity and social justice issues and the importance of developing policy in a leadership driven and collaboratively developed manner.
