Rural health care: A better model of care

Even during this time of health care transformation, some communities across the Carolinas – and across the country – still don't have access to quality health care. For those living far from access to big-city hospitals or specialists, keeping up with appointments, medications, managing chronic disease or even finding ways to stay healthy can be a constant struggle. Richard Manus sits in a conference room at Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge–Valdese. Manus was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer when he was 40. He's cancer-free now, two years after his diagnosis, but wants to find out if his family members are at risk for an inherited form of cancer. He has decided to explore genetic testing through video conferencing in Valdese, just a short distance from his home in Burke County, population 90,000. more
