What downturn? IKEA planning $15 million expansion of Calgary store

Stefan Sjöstrand, president of IKEA Canada, revealed the company’s plans in an interview with Postmedia on Tuesday. Sjöstrand said the expansion will add close to 27,000 square feet to the existing IKEA store at Deerfoot Meadows and will be complete by the end of 2017. The Calgary store currently employs approximately 300 people. Sjöstrand — who grew up in Sweden and was senior vice-president for IKEA France before being named to the Canadian post in 2014 — said the company's sales are up five percent year-over-year in Alberta, despite the oil price crash and resulting economic downturn. more
