Study: Irregular heartbeat more deadly in African-Americans

from HealthDay News

African-Americans with a common heart rhythm disorder are at higher risk than whites for serious heart complications and death, a new study finds. The disorder, called atrial fibrillation, affects about 1 percent of American adults and more than 5 percent of those 65 and older. Atrial fibrillation can raise a person's risk for stroke. The new findings may "put the focus on improving prevention efforts for adverse outcomes in African-Americans with atrial fibrillation," said study lead author and cardiologist Jared Magnani, MD. more
