Message from the President Beth Chapman

from PBUS

PBUS Welcomes The Honorable Themis Klarides, State Representative with the Connecticut General Assembly, as the keynote speaker for the For Women Only luncheon at the 2016 Mid-Year Meeting

I am excited to share with you that State Representative Themis Klarides will be our keynote speaker at the ever-popular For Women Only luncheon held on Monday, July 11, 2016.

Representative Klarides was elected in 2014 to her ninth term representing the 114th House District serving residents of Woodbridge, Orange and Derby. Members of the House Republican Caucus unanimously chose her to serve as House Republican Leader shortly thereafter.

Representative Klarides continues to be an outspoken leader on issues regarding the state's financial situation, job creation, education and many other issues. Representative Klarides is committed to improving education for all of Connecticut's children. She is a volunteer with The Umbrella Domestic Violence Group, working to assist victims of domestic violence and providing volunteer legal assistance to women and children at the shelter for victims of domestic violence. She is a member of the National Foundation of Women's Legislators' Family Building sub-committee, focusing on women's infertility issues.

Representative Klarides, along with Senate Minority Leader Fasano, were instrumental in bringing to light the types of defendants that would be released in Connecticut under Governor Malloy's Second Chance 2.0 reform. Statistics obtained from the judicial branch found that 60 percent of the people that would qualify for no bail under the governor's proposal are convicted felons and many that would qualify for non-financial release had three prior convictions.

Representative Klarides stated that, "The governor has released multiple press releases stating the daily number of pre-trial inmates who could be impacted if Second Chance 2.0 were implemented. Using those numbers and looking at the actual offenses, the governor's estimates include many more people than just the individuals who have committed only low-level, victimless offenses."

We are grateful for the review Representative Klarides gave regarding the types of defendants that could have potentially been released and the effect such releases could have on public safety. Don't miss the chance to meet her and hear her presentation!

I also want to send a heartfelt thanks to our sponsors for the luncheon: Palmetto Surety Corporation for sponsoring the luncheon and Williams National Surety Corporation for sponsoring Representative Klarides. Thank you so much for your generosity!
