DR. ENGLISH: A Capital Idea

from GBA

When should you capitalize a person's title? Only when it's used as part of a person's name; e.g., "DEFGeo President Jane Doe...", but "DEFGeo's president, Jane Doe…." or "Jane Doe, president of DEFGeo...." Some organizations, as a sign of respect, use "Our new President, Jane Doe..." If you use that approach, however, you probably should develop a style guide that indicates who gets the respectful capitalization and who does not; e.g., "Our new President...", Our new Director of Capitalization...", "Our new Member of the Capitalization Committee...", "Our new Committee Member...", and so on. more
