From Cuban immigrant to Wisconsin Guard's top enlisted soldier

Rafael Conde's first view of America was from the air and as the plane descended into Miami's airport, the 5-year-old could only marvel at how small everything looked. As his parents sat next to Conde and his brother, perhaps their thoughts were about what they were leaving behind or maybe they were thinking only of what lay ahead of them. It would be many years before Conde realized the great sacrifice they were making. The Wisconsin Army National Guard's command sergeant major was born in Cuba and fled the Communist country on a "Freedom Flight" as his parents left behind their property, their family and their homeland for a new life. more
