What about those Olympians?

from CASE

I have enjoyed the Olympics this year…of course we always enjoy watching talented young people achieving their dreams, don't we! Seems to me this year it has been such a celebration of perseverance and even a celebration of those who aren't so young! But all of them have one thing in common, they had a dream and they put in a lot of time and effort in achieving that dream. Did it seem to you that the network spotlighted the Para Olympics even more this year? It was so refreshing to see so many athletes with differing abilities be spotlighted throughout the Olympics.

Speaking of achieving dreams... When I became Executive Director of CASE on July 1, 2002, I had a dream of CASE and NASDSE having a joint conference. The first appointment I made for my first visit to D.C. was to talk with Dr. Bill East, Executive Director of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education. I told him I thought since CASE and NASDSE did a fall conference that we should have one together. Though it took us 14 years to accomplish that dream, I think it is going to be well worth the wait! There are over 550 people registered for the conference and it is truly going to be the special education administrator event of the decade. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity! To learn all about this conference, the rates, and other important information, download the registration packet or go to the www.casecec.org for all the information and links! Be sure to get registered as soon as possible as you will not want to miss this historic event! We have now contracted with a 4th hotel — the Hilton Milwaukee Reservations (414) 935-5940 use group code CASE/NASDSE so don't delay. Watch the CASE website for the link but feel free to use the telephone number and the code to make your hotel reservations. As you can tell the rooms have been going quickly!

Last week I turned my article over to CEC Executive Director, Alex Graham, to promote the very special Organizational membership! I hope you took advantage of it as it was an amazing offer — free professional insurance, special books to assist you in your job this year, on top the already great components of the District Membership package! And don't forget, now might be the perfect time to start your own local chapter — what a great way to build in a sustainable support for your teachers and staff! Need more information on how to start a local chapter? Contact me and I will be happy to help you get started!

Because of the special article last week, we are doing the results of the polls for the last two weeks! The poll for Aug. 1 asked, "What is your favorite leadership/team building activity to do with staff?" First place with 38 percent of those answering the poll was a social gathering. A close second at 31 percent was a leadership retreat. There was a tie for third at 15 percent between formal team building activities and leadership training.

The poll for Aug. 8 asked, "What kind of CEC membership do you have?" First place at 40 percent was a CEC Premier membership. Coming in second at 33 percent was Basic membership. The district membership came in third with 15 percent and there was a tie for last with 7 percent for Full membership and not a member of CEC. I would just say if you are not a member of CEC, you really need to consider the amazing benefits of belonging to this organization that does so much for the field! And of course you need to be a member of CASE!

I know this is a busy time for all school administrators and especially leaders in the field of special education! I hope you are taking advantage of all the amazing professional learning opportunities CASE and CEC offer to help you with the many Olympic sized dreams and tasks you have this time of year!
