Niagara paramedic home visits reducing ambulance, hospital ER costs

A new pilot project focused on chronic users of ambulance and emergency room services in Niagara is proving to be cost effective, but also providing vulnerable and often very frightened people with invaluable peace of mind. Faced with ever-increasing numbers of 911 calls, Niagara Emergency Medical Services piloted a "mobile integrated healthcare" model in the Welland, Pelham and Port Colborne areas in which community paramedic Ken Kohut goes into the homes of the small percentage of Niagara residents who gobble up vast amounts of resources in the ambulance service and hospital emergency departments. more
