Is it time for the USPSTF to inform — but not determine — coverage?

from Annals of Internal Medicine

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force is an independent, volunteer panel of experts that work to improve the health of Americans by making evidence-based recommendations on screening, counseling and preventative medications. Recently, former chairs of the USPSTF suggested that USPSTF guidelines should be used to inform, not determine, insurance coverage. USPSTF does not consider cost or coverage in making recommendations. Recommendations are based on a scientific assessment of benefits and harms. Mylan violated the integrity of the recommendation process by lobbying the USPSTF to develop guidelines on its EpiPen. Severing a direct linkage to coverage may be an option to best serve the American public and prevent conflict of interest. Commentary regarding this matter is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. more
