Groups that pushed hard for bail reform in the Garden State over the last few years called proposed legislation they say will derail efforts to ensure the criminal justice system is fairer for poor defendants a "dangerous assault" on progress. Assemblyman John McKeon (D-Essex) has sponsored a new bill that critics contends rolls back aspects of the reform package, set to go into effect in January 2017, by reinstituting bail as the "main mechanism" for defendants to secure their releases from jail. more
